John Glenn was one of the most celebrated American heroes of the 20th century; a Marine Corps combat pilot; one of the Mercury Seven original astronauts; and the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962. He later served as a United States Senator from Ohio and in 1998 became the oldest person to fly in space.
